Origin of Rice

Rice is the seed of the grass species, Oryza glaberrima (African rice). As a cereal grain, it is the most widely consumed staple food for a large part of the world’s human population, especially in Asia and Africa. It’s the most important grain with regard to human nutrition and caloric intake, providing more than one-fifth of the   calories consumed worldwide by humans. There are many varieties of rice and culinary preferences tend to vary regionally.

Background as hair secret

But, rice is also a great beautifying ingredient. For centuries, Asian women have used rice water to enhance their face, body and hair. Traditionally, female rice farmers from China, Japan, and other Southeast Asian countries used to bathe and wash in rice water.

The Yao ethnic women from the village of Huangluo in China are a testament to this tradition. With their average hair length of about 6 feet, these women made it to the Guinness Book of World Records as the “world’s longest hair village”. Plus these women do not have grey hair till the late 80s. The Yao women believe that the fermented rice water, which they use to cleanse their hair, is what helps to keeps their hair long, dark and clean. Rice water enables these women to de-tangle and manage their long hair, which they wrap around their heads in an elaborate high bun that is often described with names such as ‘gazing god’s bun’ or the ‘cloud bun’.

Advantages of rice water for hair

Rice water has amazing hair benefits. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Chemists found that applying rice water on hair can reduce friction between the hair strands as well as improve hair elasticity. Moreover, rice water has inositol, a carbohydrate, which help can repair damaged hair. And not just that, specialized imaging technique shows that inositol stays inside the hair even after rinsing, offering continuing hair protection.

Soaked Rice water: Rice water is great if you want to reduce hair fall and aid in growth. The amino acids present in it help in the regeneration of hair and aid faster growth of your hair. Additionally, it contains vitamins B, C, and E, which further help in hair growth. The best way it for growth is rinsing your hair with rice water as its easiest way to use the water without putting much of efforts.

Soaked  Rice Water

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice water
  • 2  cup plain water

Method: For this, you need to take 1 cup of uncooked rice. You can use any type of rice for this I m using long grain organic white rice. Wash the rice in thoroughly to remove any impurities. Then keep this washed rice in a big bowl and add two cups of clean water to the bowl. Let it sit for half an hour. After that you will notice that the water will become cloudy. This is a sign that the minerals and vitamins in the rice have seeped into the water. Take a jar and pour the water into it, straining out the rice. After shampooing, pour the rice water on your hair. Gently massage your scalp and hair and leave it on for 4 to 5 minutes. Then rinse your hair thoroughly with water. Use it once or twice a week as a last rinse.

 Fermented Rice Water

Fermented Rice water: The value of rice water is further enhanced if you ferment it. It is rich in antioxidants, minerals, B vitamins, vitamin E, and traces of pitera, a substance produced during the fermentation process. ‘Pitera’ has grown in popularity recently, and is touted as the anti-aging elixir due to its ability to promote cell regeneration and renewal.

Also, washing or rinsing your hair with fermented rice water may be better than rinsing with unfermented or plain rice water. Fermentation lowers the pH of the liquid, and this is similar to our hair’s pH, which is also on the lower side (slightly acidic). So, this slightly acidic pH plus the added nutrients from the fermentation process help restore hair’s pH balance, nourish hair follicles and improve the overall condition of hair.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup uncooked rice  ( White ,Brown ,Jasmine Rice)
  • 2  water

METHOD

For making fermented water the initial process is as same like soaking method. The only thing you need to do is leave the rice sitting in the water at room temperature for a day or until it turns slightly sour, implying that it has started to ferment. It can take anywhere from 12 to 24 hours, After that you will see the sour smell coming from water with this you can understand you fermented water is all set ready to use. Just keep in mind as the fermented rich water is quiet potent. So you need to dilute it with a cup  of  water or two before using it .or else adjust according to your hair needs, use more water for dry and less for oily hair

Boiling method: Boiling method is again one of easiest method by this entire goodness of rich comes water which make it most effective in all three and I personally like this according to my shower routine I use to prepared rice by this method so I get double advantage as rice we use to eat and water I use for my hair as it’s my all time one of favorite hair care DIY regime

Making Rice Water using boiling method :

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Soaked rice  ( White ,Brown ,Jasmine Rice)
  • 3  water

Method : For this boil the water in big utensil, once it starts boiling, now add rice into it. Once the rice cooks completely, strains, and uses that excess water. This rice water will be concentrated, so make sure to dilute it with plain water until it is just slightly cloudy. You can use this as many ways like co-conditioner, and last rinse but how I use it I m sharing after oiling or without too I use to apply the same rice water all over my hair and scalp and massage it in thoroughly and keep it on for 15 minutes and then follow up with  my normal hair wash with a mild shamboo. And I want you to share your expernice with me as for it really work well forshiny and full of luster .

Storage: You can store the rice water in the fridge and it will keep for up to a week. Shake well before use.
