DIY Mascara at Home: A Simple Natural Beauty Recipe

Looking for a simple homemade alternative to conventional mascara? This DIY mascara recipe uses a few easy-to-find ingredients to create a dark, creamy mascara that can be applied with a clean mascara wand.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon beeswax
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • ½ teaspoon shea butter (optional)
  • ½–1 teaspoon activated charcoal powder for a black shade
  • 2–3 drops vitamin E oil (optional)

How to Make DIY Mascara

1. Melt the base

Place the beeswax, coconut oil, and optional shea butter in a heat-safe bowl. Warm them gently using a double boiler until completely melted.

2. Add the colour

Remove from heat and gradually stir in the activated charcoal powder. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.

3. Add vitamin E

If using vitamin E oil, add 2–3 drops and mix well.

4. Transfer to a container

While the mixture is still warm and fluid, carefully transfer it into a clean, sterilized mascara tube or a small cosmetic container.

5. Allow it to cool

Let the mascara cool and set completely before applying.

6. Apply

Use a clean mascara wand and apply a thin coat to the lashes. Avoid getting the product directly into the eyes.

For Brown Mascara

For a softer brown shade, replace some or all of the activated charcoal with unsweetened cocoa powder. Make sure the cocoa powder is finely sifted before mixing.

Storage

Store the finished mascara in a cool, dry place. Because this is a homemade eye-area product without a conventional cosmetic preservative system, make a small batch and discard it if you notice an unusual smell, visible contamination, mold, or a change in texture.

Important Safety Tips

Because mascara is used very close to the eyes, hygiene is especially important.

  • Use freshly cleaned and properly sterilized equipment and containers.
  • Do not share homemade mascara or mascara wands.
  • Do not add water to the recipe.
  • Avoid using it if you have an eye infection or irritated/sensitive eyes.
  • Stop using it immediately if you experience redness, itching, burning, swelling, or other irritation.
  • Keep the product away from the inside of the eye.
  • When in doubt, discard the product rather than trying to extend its shelf life.

Final Thoughts

Making your own beauty products can be fun and simple, but eye-area cosmetics require extra care. This DIY mascara is best treated as a small-batch beauty experiment rather than a long-term replacement for professionally formulated mascara.
